Why MPs are backing better school food

Young people have been speaking truth to power and MPs are listening.

At our Parliament Party in Westminster, 15 young people from across England met with more than 30 MPs to celebrate the expansion of free school meals to over half a million more children and keep better school food firmly on the political agenda.

We asked some of our School Food Champions why good school food matters to them. Here’s what they told us.

“

Teachers tell me it helps children to learn better in the afternoon.

Catherine West MP

“

All children deserve good nutritious food. Food for children should be a fundamental human right.

Rebecca Long Bailey MP

“

Bite Back gives young people influential voices in changing school food policy and I want to help that happen.

Fleur Anderson MP

“

Everyone deserves to have a nutritious meal wherever they live.

David Taylor MP

“

Food is fuel and children and young people are our future.

Ashley Dalton MP

“

Improving school food is a key part of the ‘Good Food Cycle’ and improves the health of the nation.

Daniel Zeichner MP

“

Giving children a nutritious meal helps fuel learning and build a positive relationship with food.

Jen Craft MP

“

Every child deserves the best start along with the best education. School food quality is fundamental for this.

Apsana Begum MP

“

It always seems impossible until it’s done. We did it!

Sharon Hodgson MP

Young people made this happen. Now we keep going.

Days after our event the government announced new School Food Standards for England. Together with the expansion of free school meals, this change marks a huge step forward, but our work doesn’t stop here. Now we need to support schools to roll out the changes and put a system in place to make sure the rules are followed.

Young people are continuing to campaign for a school food system that puts their health first, with nutritious food available to every child, no matter where they live.

Add your voice and help us make our Bite bigger in the halls of power.

This system won’t change unless we demand it. Here’s how you can take action today.
